Decam Decam Decam Trans Tabula!

Emperor Hadrian said it best when he uttered the immortal line “decam, decam, decam trans tabula”

Is that accurate? We will let history judge us.

What IS true is that the 2022 Hadrian Cup, the nation’s favourite Tens TournamentTM was the biggest in the event’s history.

A decade since the original, and two years since the last one (thanks Covid), teams from across the UK and Ireland were keen to return to the hallowed ground of Percy Park in North Shields.

One positive to come out of the pandemic was the explosion of Touch rugby which fitted in the myriad restrictions coming out of lockdowns, so it was thrilling to have a concurrent Touch tournament this year and we thank all the IGR and local teams for embracing it.

Good spirits so they are, the Emerald Warriors booked extra hand luggage to bring the Hadrian Cup trophy back to Tyneside, having won it in 2020.

Jammy dodgers that they are, they ended up taking it back with them - AND the Antinous Plate development award as won by their 2X team.

Registration

Glasgow Raptors (nee Alphas) were unlucky to be runners up again in that category, but whatever they are called next year we are rooting for them.

And much like in the IGR League North Finals, Leeds Hunters were bridesmaids in the Hadrian Cup tier – perhaps they’ll be the brides come 2023?

Two touch trophies were also given out: the Attingo Cup awarded to Percy Park Pirates and the Vesta Plate to the Barbarians.

Attingo is Latin for 'getting in touch' and Vesta is a Roman goddess, indicating how the tournament welcomes women players too.

Training

This year the Ravens enjoyed support from many local and national organisations, with special thanks to our headline sponsor Waterstons.

We also want to mention supporters NewcastleGateshead Initiative, Greggs, Northumbrian Water, Northumbria Police and Pride Radio (please do not hand the mic around next year!)

What happens on tour stays on tour so we will say little of the afterparty in The Lofts and Kangaroo Court in Switch, but there is many and varied photographic evidence.

So will Hadrian Cup MMXXIII be even bigger and better? We will let history judge us.
